“Fashion is a way for me to share how I see the world”

Inspired by Mexico, disco and all things fun, 22-year-old Abbey Eilerman, launches her senior collection ‘Fiesta Forever’. Raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Abbey recently graduated from SCAD with a BA in Fashion/Apparel Design. She is currently studying Embroidery and Beading at Ecole Lesage Paris. You can visit Abbey Eilermann’s portfolio.

Tell us about the background of your collection.
‘Fiesta Forever’ is my senior collection. I was inspired by Mexico, disco and all things fun. Through the course of my research I became very interested in textiles, especially tapestry weaving. The majority of my collection was hand woven on a simple frame loom.

What inspires you creatively?
Textiles, colour and the effect you can achieve when used together. I aim for a visceral reaction to my designs, for them to ‘pack a punch’. I am inspired by places and things that make me smile; whether it is the yellow trailer that sits on my family’s farm, or a photo of Dolly Parton. The colours I saw on trips to Mexico and Palm Springs inspired me to use a lot of warm tropical colours for my senior collection. I also went to a Nick Cave exhibit at the St. Louis art museum and was inspired by his use of textiles, colour, and movement.

What is your favourite film of all time?
‘Practical Magic’- It is a movie from the late ’90s with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman playing witches. It makes me ridiculously happy.

What is your favourite music track?
I have been on a Dolly Parton kick lately.

What is your favourite on-line video?
Mariah’s Lollipop ‘a whimsical’ is the funniest video I’ve ever seen.

What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is a way for me to share how I see the world.

What is your Ideal fashion project?
Ideally to collaborate as a textile designer with a fashion designer who shares my bright and fun aesthetic.

How do you imagine your future?
I like to take things as they come but hope for a happy future, making things, surrounded by the people I love. In August, I am moving to Paris to study embroidery and am excited to see what the city holds for me.
