Each year, prior to its show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the Academy of Art University organizes in New York, a daylong fashion workshop for its fashion students. Those taking part travel from all over the U.S. on their own dime for this opportunity and the chance to see the AAU show at the Lincoln Center.

I remember struggling to force back the tears of joy that were welling up as I sat across the table, listening to my journalism professor Paul Wilner, deliver the good news.

My roommate, during the first semester of grad school, was a Fashion Design major. She spent hours in the design studio and at home, some nights all night long, sketching and cutting up small swatches of fabric, pasting them in a little black book, and draping patterns over her mannequin.
