Bethany Mullinix interviews Gladys Perint Palmer and discusses Giving Back and the Business of Fashion
Each year, prior to its show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the Academy of Art University organizes in New York, a daylong fashion workshop for its fashion students. Those taking part travel from all over the U.S. on their own dime for this opportunity and the chance to see the AAU show at the Lincoln Center.
In 2011, my school the Academy of Art University, offered me the opportunity to go to New-York for Spring 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. I remember struggling to force back the tears of joy that were welling up as I sat across the table, listening to my journalism professor Paul Wilner, deliver the good news.
Lights dim down. All is silent for one moment.
Lights flash on. Slowly, musical beats begin pulsating from the speakers.
The Academy of Art University’s 2012 annual spring fashion show begins.
The crowd cheers as the first model appears on runway, showcasing the first of
17 collections made by graduating seniors.
My roommate, during the first semester of grad school, was a Fashion Design major. She spent hours in the design studio and at home, some nights all night long, sketching and cutting up small swatches of fabric, pasting them in a little black book, and draping patterns over her mannequin.
Every writer, stylist, photographer and designer who contributes to the Academy of Art’s 180 Magazine, have the chance to experience it. This is their chance to experience the excitement, and the deadline pressures, of journalism in the real world. It’s their chance to sit in the front row at Fashion Week alongside Cathy Horyn and Suzy Menkes.
The fashion industry has its celebrities; not the movie stars who adorn lavish designer garments on the red carpet, but the designers themselves, IPhones came out and cameras flashed as Sarah Burton, Creative Director for Alexander McQueen, and Philip Treacy, milliner extraordinaire, made their way towards the stage of the Academy of Art University tenth annual fashion symposium.
