Chloe Murphy Writing on Wool – IFWC

New York Wrapped in Wool

When the city’s streets are carpets of white, when the avenues are lines of gleaming purity against the concrete greys above, I wander them quietly. Swathed in an endless array of soft, snow-forbidding layers, I pause to linger a moment for I sense the little luxury of something resting itself upon my weather-beaten skin.

Its boundless lengths of soft, woolly richness caress my neck and drape to my waist. A burying blanket of warmth opposing the freezing blanket of snow. I run my chilly hands over its carefully knitted structure and a wall of fuzz sends a warming tingle through my icy fingers. I breathe it in and welcome a gentle reminder of home as musty nostalgia drifts me all the way back to England. A concealing cloak of mother-like warmth.

When the city’s streets are carpets of white, when the avenues are lines of gleaming purity against the concrete greys above, they wander them quietly. Swathed in an endless array of soft, snow-forbidding layers, they pause to linger a moment for they sense the little luxury of something resting itself upon their weather-beaten skin.

On Wall Street, the dashing businessmen steady their haste, notice its cosy protection and bury their inquisitive faces amongst it. At Grand Central, the delayed commuters slow in their scurry, appreciate its natural versatility and with eagerness cover their heads. And, at the very heart of Manhattan, Central Park’s gliding ice skaters freeze in their flow, indulging in its homely comfort and shield their chilly hands.

When the city’s streets are carpets of white, when the avenues are lines of gleaming purity against the concrete greys above, I stand in perfect silence and watch, with absolute adoration, a scene of New York wrapped in wool.
