fashion student Dejan Popovic02What is the background of the work you submitted?
I have designed this children collection recently. It is inspired by my favourite childhood animated film Princess Mononoke directed by Academy Award winner Hayao Miyazaki. I started by doing illustrations of the various characters of the film which I then used as prints for the clothes. The film’s story is set in Japan and I have included in the collection, elements of Japanese traditional costume.

What inspires you creatively?
I can find inspiration in a wide range of subjects. Sometimes it is a song, a movie or a book, and sometimes it is a person or simply a detail from my everyday life and surroundings.

Your favourite film?
If I had to pick one it would be The Fountain, a 2006 film directed by Darren Aronofsky. It has such an emotional and creative story line. It is a journey through past, present and future; a story of eternal love, of life and death and its unavoidability.

Your favourite music track or album at the moment?
I recently discovered The National, an indie rock band from Ohio. It has been only few months since I started listening to their music, but in no time their songs went to the top of my lists.

Your favourite Video or short-film online?
My favourite short film is La Maison en Petits Cubes (in Japanese Tsumiki no Ie or House of Blocks) by Kunio Katō. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film in 2009. It was the second Japanese animated work to win a major Oscar.
It tells the story of an aged widower who in search of his favourite smoking pipe dives through flooded parts of his old house and relives scenes from his life.

Your favourite blog or website for inspiration?
I draw inspiration from many different places; it would difficult to list them all here. In order to simply keep up with what’s going on in the fashion world I rely on, and When I simply want to ‘surf’ through random visuals I go to sites such as Tumblr and Pinterest. Finally has everything in one place: trend forecasts, colour palettes, silhouettes and inspirations.

What do you think is hot or new in the world today?
In the last few years 3D printing has increasingly been considered a key technology. It allows the production of solid three-dimensional object in virtually any shape; its use in product and fashion design, architecture, engineering, construction, jewellery, footwear etc. seems boundless.
I just love new technologies and can’t wait to see where this one will take? New technologies just keep us wondering “What is next?” and this is so exciting!

What does Fashion mean to you?
Fashion is a way of life. It is a way of expressing who you are without having to say anything. The way someone chooses to dress does not define them as a person, but speaks volume! Fashion is a constant creation but also in its own way, a never-ending competition.

How do you imagine your future?
I hope to be admitted to one of Milan or London major fashion universities to complete a Master in fashion. I hope to have the opportunity of working for a well-respected fashion label before starting my own and hopefully make it a success.

Your ideal internship
Since I am finishing my 3 year course, I am looking to do an internship that will help me to get a good job later on and boost my career. Ideally it would be one of the industry’s biggest names such as Alexander McQueen. Of course this is not the only option!

You wonder…
Oh there are so many things I would like to know. How do you start your own label? How do you make sure your designs succeed in the industry? How do you make your way to the top? When will Florence and The Machine record a new album? And so on…
I am not sure however if there are single answers to these questions. I probably will have to figure them out for myself… Except for Florence, she better get to that studio. You hear me Florence Welch?!

What do you think? Why not tell us in the comment section below.
