Hyères, probably the most significant fashion design competition
The International Festival of Fashion and Photography at Hyères, simply known by the fashion crowd as “Hyères,” is probably the most significant fashion design competition for young designers worldwide. Previous winners of the competition include Viktor & Rolf, Gaspard Yurkievich, Felipe Oliveira Baptista, Christian Wijnants, Sandra Backlund, Jean-Paul Lespagnard and Léa Peckre.
Created in 1985 by Jean-Pierre Blanc and presided over by Didier Grumback since 1997, the festival takes place every year in April, at the Villa Noailles on the French Riviera. Its purpose is to offer young fashion designers the chance not only to show their work and gain media exposure but also build industry contacts. Two different juries select ten fashion designers and ten photographers.
One of the particularity of the Hyères festival and probably the key to its enduring relevance, is that the candidates themselves get to choose their jury. This year’s edition, the 29th, is headed by Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, the creative power house behind Opening Ceremony and Kenzo creative directors. The jury also includes Jay Massacret, Editor in chief of V Man; Chloë Sevigny, American actress; Carol Song, Head buyer at Opening Ceremony; Eric Wilson, Fashion director at InStyle USA. Other members are yet to be confirmed. Photographer Steve Hiett heads the photographic jury.
From an original selection of 312 applicants, the 10 finalists for the fashion award have been named. They are: Roshi Porkar, Austria; Pablo Henrard, Belgium; Marit Ilison, Estonia; Louis-Gabriel Nouchi, France; Coralie Marabelle, France; Kenta Matsushige, Japan; Agnese Narnicka, Latvia and Anne Kluytenaar, Netherlands.
They have been invited to Première Vision, the textile fair collaborating since 2011 with the Festival, to show their work and meet with fair exhibitors to get privileged access to their products and services, from yarns to fabrics, trimmings and manufacturers.
The Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography will take place between April 25 and April 28 when the Grand Prix will be awarded. The finalists work will continue to show at the Villa Noailles until May 25 2014.
