Lou Dalton joins Holly Fulton as Interviewee

Lou Dalton joins Holly Fulton as designers the winners of Modeconnect International Fashion Writing Competition will be invited to interview.

For each category (18 to 21 and 22 to 27 year old) the competition first prize is a five weeks Writing Residency in London, UK, during which the winner will have the unique opportunity to collaborate with Modeconnect, attend major London fashion events and interview Lou Dalton or Holly Fulton. Studio accommodation in central London will be provided for the duration of the Residency.

The competition has two rounds; each requires the submission of one 600 to 1000 words article and a maximum of five visuals. The deadline for Round 1 is February 21.

The competition has met much interest and excitement and generated many supporting comments. Here is what some members of the Jury have said.

Johannes Reponen and Grace Eagle, the editors of Address, explained: “To be a great writer, as with any craft, you’ll need to put in the hours. … This writing competition also encourages you to look at fashion from a critical perspective,” adding “remember, fashion writing is not just about the information, it’s also a form of entertainment for the reader, and you.”

Professor Catherine Harper, dean of the faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of Portsmouth, said the competition “is a unique opportunity for any budding fashion writer. It offers exposure and experience: prizes money cannot buy.”

João Paulo Nunes of TheStyleExaminer.com was more expansive and said:

“Over the last few years, as fashion has become an increasingly more popular business in the public realm and the social status of the fashion editor more glamorised and coveted, the rigour and quality of fashion journalism has suffered. … More than ever, the fashion industry needs writers and commentators with the necessary skills and knowledge to communicate the true importance and meanings of fashion. By rewarding quality writing, this competition will be an exceptional opportunity to illustrate the need of critical and articulate thinking in understanding fashion.”

Modeconnect International Fashion Writing Competition aims to promote “good” fashion writing, writing on fashion that is researched, reflective, insightful, critical, stylish and engaging. It is organised in partnership with The Woolmark Company, Polly King & Co and Laurence King Publishing.
