Happy New Year 2013
For all those involved with the launch in May 2012, of modeconnect.com a website dedicated to fashion education and creativity, the past year year could not have been more exciting.
With the first issue of its magazine section Modeconnect covered fashion in the San Francisco Bay Area, focusing on the Academy of Art University, California College of Arts and the San Francisco Fashion Incubator. At the time Modeconnect was simply an idea, yet powerful enough to be embraced and supported by fashion experts such as Simon Ungless, Amy Williams and Gladys Perint Palmer. Since May 2012, in collaboration with a number of prestigious Fashion Education Institutions, Modeconnect has covered London Graduate Fashion Week, Amsterdam and Toronto. Soon it will be the turn of Singapore.
With each City Modeconnect offers a mix of stories designed to entertain, inform, stimulate and inspire a 15 to 25 year old audience interested in studying fashion with the aim one day to work in the Fashion Industry. So far the magazine mix has included:
– Educator profiles as that of Professor Ben Barry, leading thinker of Diversity in Fashion
– Collaboration projects as varied as AMFI Individual Collection designed, produced and distributed by a team of students at AMFI or Cristina Sabaiduc, Amanda May and Jo Holland for Spring/Summer 2013
– Exhibitions such as Jean-Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk
– Student profiles like that of Chloe Jones, winner of the Georges Gold Award at LGFW12
The blog section ‘Global View’ covers special initiatives and events such as the AAU French Collection in collaboration with French Mills or the video film of B.J.Hall Couture Shoes. We welcome free submissions for publication in this section.
We have many exciting ideas and projects for the New Year. We are always keen to hear suggestions and opened to collaborations.
If you feel that what we do is of value, please inform those around you who could benefit: tell them about us or simply forward this e-mail. You may subscribe to Modeconnect’s Newsletter at the footer of any page of our website. In addition Modeconnect runs very popular Twitter Account @modeconnect and Facebook Page.
Modeconnect owes a great deal to all those we have taken part so far, to the schools and students, to its contributors; to them and to you we extend our warmest wishes for 2013.

Location editorial: San Francisco
For its first issue, Modeconnect investigates the city of San Francisco and the Bay Area. New-York City may be favoured because of its proximity to Europe but the contribution to fashion of the West Coast and in particular of San Francisco should not …
School: Gerrit Rietveld Academie
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is Amsterdam’s premier arts university. This status has been attained through a combination of a selective intake of one class per year (resulting in just three fashion design and two textile graduates in 2012) and a curriculum which focuses on developing the individual. The Rietveld does not produce form fitting designers.
School:University of Wales, NewPort
The city of Newport is situated on the edge of the Welsh border, equidistant between Bristol and Cardiff. Its location allows the university to boast two campuses which are very different in nature.
Educator Profile: Thought Leader
Adding to a long list in which figure The Guardian The Wall Street Journal, CNN, MTV and CBS, Modeconnect is delighted to feature Dr Ben Barry, recently appointed Assistant Professor of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Ryerson University School of Fashion.
Collaboration: Times Three
More often than not, the great fashion success stories of modern times are the results of collaborations. Today, designers rarely create alone, instead they partner with other creatives within a studio or across the different stages of the design cycle.
Collaboration: AMFI Individuals
AMFI’s Individuals project is probably the best example of what reality school can achieve. It is a 6 month minor that BA students at AMFI can take during their third or at the beginning of their fourth and final year.
Exhibition: Jean Paul Gaultier
The journey starts on water: sailors keep company with mermaids and are overseen by madonnas. Gaultier himself, through the ‘animated’ face of a mannequin, dressed as a sailor, welcome the visitors to his world.
Student Profile: Chloe Victoria Jones
As a fashion graduate, Chloe Jones is as good as they come. This is certainly what the industry thinks. The Bath Spa graduate received the Gold prize at London Graduate Fashion Week 2012. This is one of the highest accolades a student designer can hope to receive in the UK
Professional Profile: Fashion Stylist
Marzia Fossati who styled and told us the story of the Soul Retrieval shoot, very kindly accepted to answer additional questions relating to her job. Marzia lives and works in Milano, Italy.
Professional Profile: Mansoor Scott
It seems Bethany Meuleners and Sabah Mansoor Husain are living the dream. Their respective graduation collections for the Academy of Art University (AAU) were very well received at the Fall 2010 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
Collaboration: AAU & French Mills
12 students from the AAU School of Fashion were selected to design a collaborative collection using textiles donated by French mills.
B. J. Hall Couture Shoes
This Couture Shoe Collection designed by artist / designer Benjamin John Hall certainly deserves the YKK sponsored ITS Accessory Award it won this summer.
