Omsk Definitive Fashion Competition
Over 17 years “Fashion Formula: East – West” as grown from an internal contest for undergraduate students at the Omsk State Institute of Service – the university which house the Omsk Fashion Design School – to a fashion competition of international renown.
Every year the competition celebrates and promotes the talent of fashion design students, helping to kick-start their career in the fashion industry. “Fashion Formula: East – West” also helps establish and strengthen links between students, education institutions and the regional and national fashion industries.
Organized by Omsk State Institute of Service, the Russian Federation Ministry of Science & Education and Omsk Oblast’s (Region) Ministry of Education and Ministry of Culture, the Fashion Formula competition is sponsored by the Russian Academy of National Fashion Industry and the Designers Union of the Russian Federation.
On the 8th of April 2013, showcasing at Omsk Drama theatre, “Fashion Formula: East – West” 17th edition received national and international media coverage and for the first time has contributed to the selection of Best Debut of the Year fashion design nominations for the Russian Federation “Fashion Industry National Prize.”
Participants to the competition herald from all parts of Russia, from Siberia of course but also the Urals, Far East and Midlands regions. To take part they must be nominated by their school, a fashion company or creative agency. A few individual candidates have also been accepted. Candidates must be below 35 years of age and present between 5 to 7 looks. In 2012 more than 30 collections competed.
The jury of the competition mixes well-known designers with members of creative craft guilds, fashion industry insiders and members of the media. In 2013 it was headed byAlexander Khilkevich a senior fashion lecturer in Moscow and a leading journalist who stated: ”Omsk fashion design contest Fashion Formula: East – West, is certainly one of the brightest and most interesting in Russia.”
Tatiana Mikhalkova former model and president of the “Russian Silhouette” Foundation also took part, a regular in Omsk confirmed: ”We have worked with Omsk Fashion Design School for more than 15 years and the talent of its students and teachers has never failed to surprise and delight us.”
Every year prizes vary, ranging according to the awards from exchanges with famous European fashion schools such as Istituto Marangoni and Central Saint-Martins, London; to internships with some of the best fashion houses and publications in Moscow and St. Petersburg and trips to famous fashion events such as Paris “Premier Vision”.
Collections are evaluated for artistic creativity and design innovation, quality of make and finish and commercial attractiveness and value according to the Awards.
These include: Prеt-а-Portеr, Prêt-à-Porter de luxe, Ethnical Fashion, Best Clothes made of Linen, Best collection for Performance, Video-Art and Best Debut.
For the 17th edition, Omsk Alena Konnova’s collection « Pantograph» was awarded the Grand Prize and 720,000 ruble ($ 22,400), as a special cash prize sponsored by the Russian Federation Ministry of Science and Education.
The Pret-a-Porter nominations saw five collections rewarded. Elena Kovban’s collection «Control prints» and Omsk Daria Praynicova’s collection «SYNTAX» were both awarded a 1st prize. In 2nd place came the collection of Novosibirsk Daria Bulikina and Sofia Kondratieva «Altman’s scale» and that of Omsk Olga Boayrkina «Kinetics of protection». The 3rd prize went to Omsk Anna Saichuk for her collection «Five qualities of spring».
Three collections were rewarded in the Ethnical Experiments category, respectively in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, Omsk Egor Galizdra’s collection «We», Omsk Ayna Kholoimenko’s «LacOta» and Altai republic Cheinesh Badikova’s collection «Expedition».
Omsk Gulia Rusinova’s , collection «Flora» won Best Clothes made of Linen award and received a stock of elaborate linen fabrics and the money prize from the company Linum.
Three students from Omsk won an award in the Prêt-a-Porter de Luxe category, in this order: Marina Provilkova for «Loves? Doesn’t love?», Anna Berezovskaya for «Mint punch and Anastasia Shaburova for «Silentium».
The 1st and 2nd prize for Best Collection in Performance went in this order, to Omsk Grigoriy Korobeynikov’s collection «Princess» and to St. Petersburg Tatyana Grakova’s collection «Vivaldi for KPK» while Omsk graduates Ekaterina and Marina Butenko both got a third prize for their collections.
Finally the Best in Debut Awards went to Tomsk Anastasia Puzankova’s collection «Lavina» that was automatically selected to compete in the Russian Federation “Fashion Industry National Prize” with the possibility some of the 300,000 ruble prize pool. Second and third came Tomsk Tyumen Elena Gileva’s collection «Yes! We are Scythian» and the collection «Hobo» created by Alena Loiko and Anna Sorokina from Irkutsk.
The first prizes of each category were offered the trip and participation to the competitions “Russian Silhouette” in Moscow.
Novosibirsk Daria Bulikina and Sofia Kondratieva who created the collection «Altman’s scale» were both invited to attend the MA in Costume Design at Omsk State Institute of Service.
“Fashion Formula: East – West” is held annually. All talented and ambitious young designers are invited to participate and to demonstrate their design skills, share their creativity and vision with the public, all over Russia and further afield.
