Written and directed in 2009 by Álvaro de la Herrán, “Why” is described as an editorial fashion film with GQ Spain and features garments from a range of AW 2009 collections.

Álvaro de la Herrán’s background in photography, advertising, film and music enable him to develop creative audio-visual formats. His work tries to balance the visual and the storytelling, the emotional and the symbolic. It has been features in films festivals worldwide earning Álvaro collaborations with magazines like GQ, Vogue Italia and Elle.

Álvaro de la Herrán has been screened in several editions of ASVOFF – A Shaded View On Fashion Film Festival. Launched in 2008 by Diane Pernet, ASVOFF has gained critical acclaim for encouraging both emerging and established artists to reconsider the way that fashion is presented and for challenging the conventional parameters of film. ASVOFF favours films that are ground breaking and avant-garde, often questioning issues around beauty and gender. ASVOFF takes place both in Paris and travels the world with screenings in creative capitals.

A few months ago Alvaron worked with GQ Spain again and created a fashion film inspired by 50 Shades of Grey entitled ‘Mine’. Its erotic nature makes it better suited for a mature audience. I have chosen instead to include a second film Alumbramiento commissioned in 2010 by AVOFF for Vogue Italia. Its total lack narrative brings it in contrast with the rest of my curation.
