New-York City may be favoured as a fashion centre because of its proximity to Europe but the contribution to fashion of the US West Coast, and in particular of San Francisco, should not be underestimated.
San Francisco Fashion History
The maverick spirit and the dynamism of the region, often acknowledged for high technologies are also present in fashion. After all San Francisco is the cradle of the most iconic of garments, the denim Jeans. The first pair of Levis 501 Jeans was produced in the city over 130 years ago in 1873, and the Bay Area is still home to many global brands such as Levi Strauss, The North Face and Marmot amongst others.
San Francisco Fashion Schools
San Francisco may in fact be an ideal place to study fashion. Some distance from the excitement and commerciality of Fashion Week offers fashion students the opportunity to develop their own creative identity. The site of San Francisco is stunning, its climate very pleasant and the Bay Area offers a good range of fashion schools.
We have counted a total of six: California College of Arts, Academy of Art University, City College of San Francisco, Art Institute of California, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and Apparel Arts.
